Meera truly needs introduction….she is not a celebrity, not a genius, neither somebody you are familiar with. How can you know her! But if I say she is a short, deprived and ill fated girl, who had to bargain her childhood to earn money working as a maid servant, would any one be interested to hear?
Meera took to the profession when she was hardly seven, may be she didn’t even know what she was getting into. Her bubbly activity, short-cropped hair, old dress but a refreshing smile were the first thing you would notice about her. But the most remarkable thing was her dancing, that would start whenever and wherever, and her funny steps would lead everyone roll with laughter. She would speak funny things as well – may be they were some figment of her imagination. She was not very good with household chores and that is pardonable considering her age. She would forget to do things, steal and eat, would lie and for all these activities she was never treated kindly. She would lament and cry, but did anyone care to look back at the poor soul.
Meera willingly or unwillingly had to work. There were people who would show love and care to her at the beginning and lure her to work in their home. But soon that generosity would disappear and they would take to sticks and hand to bit her. Meera’s fate kept toggling from one home to another, as if she was just a plaything, with no voice to protest, a lifeless object indeed whose fate has been written by those who just served her with two meals a day. Meera is cursed to lead such a life, with no identity of her own, with innocence lost, with only pain to bear and much more to suffer. Don’t know where Meera is today, but I pray for her and hope I could do something for her.
If you see or hear the cry of any such child, please do something for her. Save her life! Stop child abuse!
